The gut microbiome of wild animals plays crucial roles in immunity, nutrition, and disease resistance. Anthropogenic changes including habitat loss, diet shifts, and antibiotic exposure are altering wild animal microbiomes with welfare consequences.
Wild animal microbiome health connects conservation and welfare in ways that are only beginning to be understood. Animals with depleted microbiomes are more vulnerable to pathogens, may have impaired digestion of natural foods, and show altered immune responses. Conservation translocation programmes that move animals from captivity to the wild must now consider microbiome restoration alongside other rehabilitation needs. The anthropogenic drivers of microbiome disruption -- pesticides, antibiotics, habitat fragmentation -- are the same drivers of broader welfare decline. Addressing these root causes improves individual animal health while supporting population-level conservation outcomes.
