Positive welfare science goes beyond minimising negative states to actively promoting positive experiences for animals. Understanding this framework helps advocates demand more than the absence of suffering.
Positive welfare science fundamentally shifts what counts as acceptable animal husbandry. The absence of visible suffering is no longer sufficient -- positive welfare requires actively providing opportunities for animals to experience positive mental states through play, exploration, social engagement, and expression of natural behaviour. This higher standard demands more from producers and carers but also provides a more complete account of animal wellbeing. For advocates, using positive welfare language and criteria strengthens the case for welfare improvements by articulating what good welfare looks like rather than only what bad welfare involves.
