The Eurasian siskin is a small finch closely tied to conifer forests whose welfare reflects the condition of both upland plantations and lowland alders along river valleys.
Siskins face boom-and-bust welfare cycles linked to conifer cone mast years. In poor seed years, individuals must travel far to find food, burning reserves. Juveniles are particularly vulnerable. Supplemental garden feeding buffers winter mortality but cannot substitute for healthy forest ecosystems with diverse age structures.
