The yellow wagtail is a brilliant summer migrant that has undergone severe decline in the UK as wet meadows, traditionally managed grasslands, and lowland pasture have been drained and intensified.

Welfare Considerations

Intensification removes the insect-rich sward structure on which chick feeding depends. Ground nests are destroyed by silage cutting. In Africa, Sahel degradation reduces wintering food availability. Recovery requires landscape-scale wet grassland restoration combined with international conservation cooperation.
