The bullfinch is a strikingly beautiful finch with rose-pink breast whose UK population has declined substantially since the 1970s, linked to loss of hedgerows, scrub, and traditional orchards.

Welfare Considerations

Bullfinches suffer welfare impacts from loss of diverse hedgerow and scrub habitat that provides seeds, buds, and invertebrates throughout the annual cycle. The loss of traditional orchards eliminates important food sources. Harsh winters reduce seed and bud availability, causing nutritional stress. Legal culling that previously occurred on commercial orchards has ended but illegal persecution continues in some areas.
