Welfare Considerations

Yellowhammer welfare has been systematically undermined by the removal of all three required habitat components from modern farm landscapes. Scrubby hedgerow margins have been grubbed out. Invertebrate prey has been eliminated by insecticides. Weed seeds have been suppressed by herbicides and autumn tillage. Birds attempting to raise three broods now frequently fail at the second or third attempt due to insufficient chick food.
