Outdoor-access pig systems provide welfare benefits through rooting, sunlight, and natural behavior expression that indoor systems cannot replicate — but design and management determine whether the welfare potential is realized.
Outdoor pig systems represent genuine welfare progress for the animals in them — the ability to root, wallow, and engage in natural behaviors provides behavioral welfare that indoor systems deny. But welfare potential depends entirely on management quality. Overused outdoor paddocks become churned mud baths that cause lameness and disease, transforming a welfare benefit into a welfare problem. Rotation of paddocks, provision of dry lying areas, shade, and wallows maintained at appropriate conditions are what distinguish welfare-realizing outdoor systems from those that provide the appearance of outdoor access without the welfare substance.
