The Eurasian coot is an aggressive and territorial waterbird abundant on lakes and reservoirs, whose welfare reflects the health of aquatic vegetation communities and the quality of freshwater habitats.
Coot welfare deteriorates when aquatic vegetation communities collapse due to nutrient pollution and algal blooms. Eutrophication eliminates the submerged plant beds that provide food and nesting cover. Recreational disturbance on reservoirs and lakes during the breeding season causes nest desertion. Lead poisoning from ingested fishing weights is a documented welfare problem in coot populations using heavily fished waters.
