The little grebe is the smallest diving bird in Britain, found on ponds, lakes, and slow rivers, where its welfare depends on clear water with abundant small fish and invertebrates.
Little grebe welfare is sensitive to water clarity, which determines the visibility available for underwater prey pursuit. Turbidity from algal blooms or agricultural runoff reduces foraging success and chick provisioning rates. Small ponds used for breeding dry up or become too shaded as marginal vegetation grows without management. Recreational use of small lakes disturbs nesting pairs during the critical April to July period.
