The northern pintail is one of the most elegant ducks in the world, with the male carrying extraordinary elongated tail feathers, but as a UK breeding bird it is critically rare and its welfare situation is severe.

Welfare Considerations

UK breeding pintail face welfare challenges from the loss of shallow, productive wetland habitats surrounded by open tussocky ground suitable for nesting. Predation by foxes and mink is a primary cause of nest failure. Wintering pintail on estuaries are subject to shooting pressure and disturbance from recreational activity. The tiny UK breeding population is so small that recovery requires targeted conservation at individual sites.
