The garden warbler is a summer migrant with one of the most beautiful songs of any British bird, yet its welfare depends on the availability of dense, tall scrub at mid-successional stages that are often eliminated by modern land management.

Welfare Considerations

Garden warbler welfare depends on the availability of tall, dense scrub at the transition between open land and woodland. Habitat management that either clears scrub to grass or allows it to succeed to closed woodland eliminates the optimal breeding habitat. Scrub removal for amenity reasons on many nature reserves and parks is a significant welfare pressure. On migration, the species is subject to illegal trapping in Mediterranean countries during its southward passage.
