Pet goats are increasingly popular in smallholdings and hobby farms, but their welfare needs — particularly social housing and behavioral complexity — are frequently underestimated by new owners.
Companion goat welfare problems are largely predictable and preventable with adequate preparation. Social isolation is the most common welfare failure: a single goat is a distressed goat, and the behavioral indicators — constant vocalization, escape attempts, stereotypic pacing — are impossible to ignore. Environmental enrichment through climbing structures, browsing material, and novel objects prevents boredom in animals evolved for complex varied terrain. Veterinary access for goats is more limited than for dogs and cats, requiring owners to identify a goat-experienced veterinarian before problems arise. The joy of goat companionship is genuine — but it requires genuine preparation.
