Welfare Considerations

Sea turtles with gut impaction from plastic bags cannot feed and slowly starve. Seabird chicks fed plastic instead of food die of malnutrition or gut perforation. Entangled dolphins, seals, and whales suffer from restricting wounds that worsen over time, causing infection, strangulation, and drowning. At the population level, plastic accumulation in food webs affects reproductive success and immune function through chemical contamination. The welfare case for reducing plastic production, improving waste management, and cleaning up existing pollution is direct, evidence-based, and urgent.
