Precision fermentation has welfare implications that extend further than cultivated meat in some respects: it can eliminate the need for animals entirely in producing certain protein categories. Dairy production welfare harms — calf separation, mastitis, lameness, and metabolic disease — could be eliminated if fermentation-derived dairy proteins achieve sufficient quality and cost parity. Egg production welfare harms — beak trimming, overcrowding, grinding of male chicks — could similarly be addressed. The welfare timeline is more immediate than cultivated meat because fermentation infrastructure exists and regulatory approval is advancing. Consumer acceptance depends partly on communication: fermentation-derived products are natural processes and the proteins produced are chemically identical to animal-derived equivalents. The welfare case for supporting this technology is strong.
