Welfare Considerations
Plant and algae proteins have a clear welfare advantage over animal proteins: they involve no animal suffering in production. The land freed by shifting to plant protein can be rewilded, reducing habitat pressure on wild animal populations. The crops themselves do not have welfare status. The primary welfare consideration with plant proteins is indirect: monoculture crop production can reduce insect and wildlife diversity in farmed landscapes. Organic and agroecological plant production that maintains biodiversity and avoids pesticides mitigates this concern. From a welfare perspective, combining reduced animal product consumption with support for biodiversity-friendly plant agriculture represents the most comprehensive approach to reducing food system welfare impacts.
