AI and digital technologies offer welfare improvements that were previously unachievable through human inspection alone. Early detection of lameness, disease, and abnormal behaviour reduces the duration of suffering by enabling faster intervention. Continuous monitoring removes the reliance on scheduled inspections that may miss welfare problems occurring between visits. Precision management that responds to individual animal behaviour reduces the average stress of farm management. However, technology cannot substitute for good stockperson welfare knowledge and motivation — it provides information, but welfare improvement requires human action on that information. The welfare potential of these technologies is significant, and their cost is falling rapidly, making widespread farm adoption increasingly feasible.
