Lizards are among the most popular exotic pets but also among those most frequently kept in substandard conditions. Understanding what lizards actually need reveals the gap between common pet trade practices and good welfare.
Lizard welfare in the pet trade is compromised at multiple levels. Wild-caught animals experience capture trauma and high transit mortality. Commercially bred lizards are often sold without adequate owner education about their complex needs. Metabolic bone disease — caused by inadequate UVB lighting, calcium, and temperature — is one of the most prevalent welfare conditions in pet lizards and causes chronic pain, fractures, and premature death. Bearded dragons kept under inadequate lighting develop this condition silently over months before clinical signs are apparent. The welfare case for mandatory standardised keeper education, UVB lighting requirements, and minimum enclosure size standards is supported by the prevalence of entirely preventable welfare conditions in the pet lizard population.
