Traditional rabbit hutches are now widely condemned by welfare experts as inadequate. Understanding rabbit spatial and social needs is vital for good welfare.
The welfare science is unambiguous: traditional wooden hutches fail to meet rabbit needs. Rabbits confined in small spaces develop stereotypies (repetitive behaviours), aggression, and chronic musculoskeletal problems. The Five Freedoms framework demands freedom from discomfort and freedom to express normal behaviour — both are violated by most commercially sold hutches. Housing should consist of a large enclosure with a secure run attached, permanent 24-hour access to both, and at least one bonded companion.
