Hamsters suffer significantly in the small barred cages commonly sold in pet shops. Research shows that hamsters in enriched, large enclosures show fewer stereotypies (bar-chewing, repetitive running), better coat condition, and longer lifespans. Waking hamsters during daytime for handling disrupts their circadian rhythm and elevates stress hormones. A large bin cage or purpose-built enclosure with deep substrate for burrowing, an appropriately sized wheel, and interaction only during evening hours meets welfare minimums.
