Welfare Considerations

Chinchillas are athletically adapted for leaping and climbing in rocky mountain terrain. They need multi-level enclosures at least 1m tall with platforms, ledges, and hiding spaces. Housed in small cages or at temperatures above 25°C, they suffer from heat stress, obesity, dental malocclusion, and boredom-related stereotypies. Many chinchillas in captivity are fed inappropriate sweet treats that cause gut stasis and death. Their long lifespan means poor welfare decisions accumulate into decades of suffering.

What You Can Do

House in a tall multi-level enclosure with safe platforms and ledges
Keep room temperature below 22°C at all times — install air conditioning if needed
Provide volcanic pumice dust baths 2-3 times per week in a separate container
Feed unlimited hay supplemented with chinchilla-specific pellets — no fruit or sugary treats
Keep in bonded same-sex pairs or groups from a young age
