Hermit crabs require 15-30cm of moist coconut fibre substrate to moult safely, stable humidity between 70-80%, appropriate salinity gradients, and a group of 5+ individuals. Painted shells are toxic and must never be used. The wild-capture trade for the pet market removes millions of individuals annually from beach ecosystems. The good news is that welfare-committed keepers achieve long-lived, active, healthy hermit crabs.
