Livestock guardian dogs occupy a unique welfare niche: they are working animals whose job requires semi-independent living with livestock rather than human companionship. Their welfare needs are frequently overlooked because they appear self-sufficient. Regular veterinary checks, adequate nutrition calibrated to workload, parasite control, and social contact with either humans or other guardian dogs are essential. Dogs showing fear, aggression toward livestock, or chronic injury need immediate assessment — these behaviours signal welfare failure, not normal working-dog variation.
