Welfare Considerations

Backyard chicken keeping can represent a significant welfare improvement over factory farming, but it is not automatically welfare-positive. Hens kept in small, enrichment-poor runs without adequate dust baths, perches, or space develop stereotypies and reproductive disorders. The hatchery problem persists — male chicks of egg-laying breeds are killed at source regardless of where the hen ends up. Keepers who commit to lifelong care (including veterinary treatment, non-productive seasons, and old age support) and source from welfare-positive hatcheries offer their birds genuinely better lives.

What You Can Do

Provide a minimum of 1 square metre per hen indoors and 4 square metres per hen outdoors
Include a dust bath, perches at multiple heights, and enrichment objects in the coop and run
Source hens from hatcheries that use in-ovo sexing technology to avoid male chick culling
Commit to lifelong care including veterinary treatment and retirement beyond laying years
