Wild salmon welfare sits at the intersection of individual suffering, population collapse, and ecological disruption. Each fish navigating a spawning migration faces physical exhaustion, predation, thermal stress, and in many rivers, barrier obstacles and angling. Farmed salmon live in high-density net pens where sea lice infestations cause skin damage, stress, and systemic disease. The two systems interact: farm escapees dilute wild genetics, and farm-amplified sea lice devastate wild smolt populations. Welfare-conscious aquaculture — closed containment systems that prevent escape and parasite transfer — would address both farmed and wild salmon welfare simultaneously.
