Hamster welfare has become a focus of citizen science and welfare research that has revealed a dramatic gap between common commercial provision and evidence-based welfare requirements. Standard pet shop cages — often sold as 'complete starter kits' — are typically far too small, have wheels that cause physical harm, and lack the depth of substrate needed for the burrowing behavior that is fundamental to hamster behavioral expression. German welfare guidelines now require minimum 800 square centimeter floor space with deep substrate. UK and US welfare guidance is moving in the same direction. The barrier to better hamster welfare is primarily consumer awareness and retail product quality, not owner willingness once informed.
