Reducing meat consumption is the single most impactful individual action for animal welfare. Understanding the scale and nature of this impact motivates and sustains dietary change.
Dietary change is the highest-leverage individual welfare action available to most people. But the welfare calculus is more nuanced than simply eliminating all animal products: the welfare impact of choosing higher welfare chicken over conventional chicken for some meals may exceed the impact of switching from conventional beef to tofu for others, because of differences in numbers of animals involved and the severity of suffering in different systems. An evidence-based approach to dietary welfare prioritises the species with the largest number of individuals and the most severe welfare failures — laying hens and broilers — followed by pigs, then other farmed species.
