The ornamental fish trade kills far more fish than are ever purchased by aquarium keepers. The mortality cascade — capture, holding tanks, export, import, wholesale, retail — loses the majority of wild-caught fish before they reach a home aquarium. Each of these deaths involves the pain and stress documented in fish welfare research. The welfare case for choosing captive-bred freshwater fish, or captive-bred marines where available, is overwhelming. For wild-caught marines, the welfare argument must be balanced against the conservation argument that the trade, if sustainably managed, can support reef communities. Neither argument justifies the current mortality rates.
