Welfare Considerations

Primate research welfare is the most ethically complex area in animal research. The cognitive complexity, social bonds, and emotional depth of non-human primates means that every individual used in research experiences welfare harms that are arguably comparable in scale to those experienced by humans in analogous conditions. The welfare trajectory is toward elimination: great apes are effectively banned, replacement technologies are advancing, and social housing requirements reduce but do not eliminate the welfare cost of captivity. The most defensible position supports the fastest possible transition to non-primate models while maintaining the highest possible welfare standards for animals currently used.
