Dairy goats are increasing in popularity as milk and cheese production diversifies. Their welfare needs differ from dairy cattle in important ways that require specific attention.
Dairy goat welfare is frequently overlooked compared to cattle, pig, and poultry welfare — partly because goats appear more resilient and partly because the industry is smaller and less scrutinised. Goats are however highly social, cognitively active animals whose welfare needs in commercial systems are frequently compromised. Kid separation causes the same welfare harm as calf separation in cattle. Disbudding without analgesia is legal in many jurisdictions but causes demonstrable pain. Goats kept in barren environments without climbing structures, social grouping, and foraging enrichment develop chronic boredom and stereotypies. The welfare science is available — implementation lags significantly behind cattle and pig systems.
