Turkeys are among the most intensively farmed animals globally, bred to grow so fast their bodies often fail them. Welfare problems are widespread and largely invisible to consumers who purchase turkey as a seasonal centrepiece.
Turkey welfare is a case where selective breeding for productivity has fundamentally compromised the biological integrity of the animal. Commercial turkeys cannot walk normally, breathe normally or reproduce naturally. The welfare baseline in conventional turkey farming is very low. For consumers, the single most impactful choice is to reduce turkey consumption, choose from higher-welfare sources, or shift to plant-based alternatives for festive occasions. Welfare-certified turkeys from farms meeting higher standards are available, but carry a significant price premium that reflects the true cost of better care.
