Livestock guardian dogs perform a vital role in protecting sheep, goats and other livestock from predators. Their welfare is closely tied to appropriate breed selection, socialisation and management throughout their working lives.
Livestock guardian dog welfare is often overlooked precisely because these dogs work in remote conditions where monitoring is difficult. The assumption that working dogs thrive naturally in their role underestimates the physical and psychological demands placed on them. Regular veterinary care, appropriate nutrition, social companionship from other dogs and freedom from chronic exposure to injuries or parasites are minimum welfare requirements. In conservation contexts where LGDs are used to prevent livestock predation by wolves or bears, welfare management must account for the specific risks of that environment.
