Atlantic salmon is the most valuable farmed fish species globally. Pain science research on salmon has produced some of the most compelling evidence for fish sentience, with direct implications for how the industry should operate.
Salmon pain science has shifted the moral status of one of the most intensively farmed animal species from uncertain to probable. The implications are significant: sea lice management, crowding densities, slaughter methods and handling protocols all need to be evaluated through a welfare lens that takes salmon pain seriously. Consumer demand for welfare-certified salmon — including specific requirements on sea lice treatment, stocking density and slaughter method — is the most direct market signal available. Regulatory frameworks that extend meaningful welfare protection to farmed salmon are urgently needed.
