Environmental enrichment — providing objects, social opportunities, and sensory stimulation — is one of the most powerful welfare improvements available for laboratory animals, and also improves experimental validity.
The science of environmental enrichment for laboratory animals is now well-established, showing benefits for both welfare and research quality. Stressed, impoverished animals produce more variable data, compromising reproducibility. The 3Rs framework — Replace, Reduce, Refine — explicitly includes enrichment as a refinement that reduces suffering. Implementation gaps persist between evidence and practice, particularly in smaller institutions and in non-Western research contexts.
