Elephant welfare in zoos has become one of the most scrutinised areas of captive animal management, with growing evidence that zoo environments cannot meet the complex social, cognitive, and physical needs of these long-lived megafauna.
The welfare case against zoo elephant keeping has become increasingly compelling as evidence accumulates on the health, reproductive, and behavioural consequences of captivity. Accreditation bodies have significantly strengthened elephant welfare standards, but fundamental constraints on space and social complexity cannot be fully addressed within zoo settings. Large accredited elephant sanctuaries — such as the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee — offer more welfare-positive alternatives for non-releasable elephants, and the trend toward zoo-to-sanctuary transfer is accelerating.
