Catfish welfare is directly tied to water quality. Inadequate dissolved oxygen causes gasping, crowding at the surface, and physiological distress. Ammonia accumulation damages gills and causes systemic toxicity. Poor water quality suppresses immune function and makes fish vulnerable to bacterial and parasitic infections. These stressors are preventable with proper management, aeration equipment, and stocking density controls — but cost pressures in competitive aquaculture markets often lead to corner-cutting.
