Freshwater mussels are among the most endangered animal groups on Earth, and their welfare during habitat degradation, translocation, and captive breeding deserves greater attention.
While freshwater mussels are rarely considered in welfare discussions, conservation programs that physically handle, transport, and propagate them should consider minimizing harm. Mussels respond to environmental stressors and their filter-feeding physiology makes them acutely sensitive to water chemistry changes. Rapid environmental changes during translocation — temperature shifts, oxygen fluctuations, and physical handling — may cause physiological stress even if the subjective experience is uncertain.
