Play is a fundamental welfare need for cats of all ages — expressing predatory motivation, building coordination, providing cognitive stimulation, and serving as a positive welfare indicator when it occurs spontaneously and frequently.
Cat play welfare is both a need and a diagnostic — cats in good welfare play spontaneously and engage enthusiastically with interactive toys. Play deprivation produces frustration that manifests as aggression, hyperactivity, and destructive behaviour. Two daily interactive play sessions of 10-15 minutes each using wand toys that simulate prey movement, ending with a simulated catch and a food reward, satisfy predatory motivation and provide measurable welfare improvement.
