Precision livestock farming represents one of the most promising technological developments for animal welfare at commercial scale. The ability to monitor thousands of individual animals continuously and detect welfare problems days before they become clinically obvious could transform preventive veterinary care and reduce the duration of untreated suffering significantly. The welfare gains are real but contingent: technology that generates alerts which farmers ignore or cannot act upon promptly does not improve welfare. Training, support, and clear action protocols are as important as sensor accuracy.
