Acoustic monitoring represents a genuinely promising welfare science development because it offers non-invasive, continuous assessment of animal emotional states at scales ranging from individual animals to entire landscapes. Traditional welfare assessment requires human presence and observation, which both disturbs the animals being observed and limits the time and scale of monitoring. Automated acoustic monitoring can run continuously, cover large areas, and detect subtle changes in vocalisation patterns that indicate stress or positive states without requiring observer presence. For livestock welfare monitoring, automated analysis of pig and cattle vocalisations is already showing practical promise as an on-farm welfare indicator. For wildlife, landscape-scale acoustic monitoring can detect population-level stress responses to environmental changes.
