Unlike individual animal welfare interventions, habitat restoration delivers sustained benefits across generations of fish and multiple species simultaneously. The connection between habitat quality and fish welfare is direct: fish in degraded, channelised rivers with poor water quality experience chronic stress, nutritional deprivation, and reproductive failure; fish in restored rivers with appropriate depth, flow, temperature, and food supply have access to the conditions their welfare depends on.
