The welfare costs of intensive livestock genetic selection represent one of the most significant but least publicly discussed dimensions of industrial animal agriculture. Breeding animals to produce at physiological extremes creates animals that suffer from the demands of their own bodies rather than from external conditions alone. Reversing this requires explicit inclusion of welfare traits in breeding objectives alongside production traits — a technically feasible approach that requires commercial will and regulatory incentive to implement. The Better Chicken Commitment breed welfare requirement is one example of consumer-driven market pressure forcing breed reform; similar approaches applied to dairy, pig, and turkey genetics could achieve comparable welfare improvements at scale.
