If cultivated meat achieves price parity and consumer acceptance at scale, it could displace significant volumes of conventional meat production, sparing billions of animals from factory farm conditions annually. The welfare case is therefore substantial and long-term. However, current production still relies on fetal bovine serum in some processes — an animal-derived growth medium obtained through ethically problematic means. The industry is actively developing animal-free alternatives, and welfare advocates should monitor and support this transition. The displacement pathway depends on regulatory approval in major markets, consumer behaviour change, and continued cost reduction — all of which require sustained investment and public support.
