Decades of research have revealed fish to be cognitively complex animals capable of learning, memory, and social behaviour. These findings have profound implications for how we should treat fish.
Fish cognition research has consistently exceeded expectations, revealing capacities for learning, memory, social complexity, and in some cases apparent self-awareness. These findings are directly relevant to welfare: cognitive complexity is associated with richer inner experience and greater capacity for suffering. Fish can learn to avoid painful stimuli, remember individual humans, and coordinate with conspecifics in sophisticated ways. The historical dismissal of fish as unfeeling automatons has no scientific basis. This means the conditions of billions of farmed and wild-caught fish — crowding, painful procedures without anaesthesia, rough handling, live bycatch — demand moral consideration proportional to their cognitive capacity.
