Water quality is the most fundamental determinant of fish welfare in aquaculture. Poor oxygen levels, excessive ammonia, incorrect temperature, and high carbon dioxide all cause physiological stress and welfare harm.
Fish experience their entire lives through water — its temperature, chemistry, oxygen content, and clarity determine whether they can breathe, regulate their metabolism, maintain immune function, and behave normally. Poor water quality causes physiological states equivalent to chronic respiratory compromise or chemical toxicity. Ammonia burns gill tissue; low oxygen causes suffocation stress; elevated carbon dioxide creates acidosis that disrupts basic physiological processes. These conditions are common in poorly managed intensive aquaculture. Modern recirculating systems can maintain excellent water quality if properly operated, but require skilled management and monitoring. Open cage systems in sea or freshwater are subject to environmental variability that can cause acute welfare crises during algal blooms or temperature extremes. Water quality is the single most impactful welfare parameter in fish farming.
