Facial recognition technology is being applied to livestock monitoring, enabling individual animal identification without physical tagging. This emerging technology has significant potential welfare applications.
Livestock identification has traditionally required physical tagging — ear tags, ear punches, or branding — that cause pain at application and chronic discomfort in some animals. Facial recognition offers a tag-free identification method that could eliminate these welfare harms while enabling more precise individual monitoring. Combined with behavioural monitoring AI, it could enable detection of welfare deviations at the level of individual animals in large groups — identifying the single sick cow in a herd of 500 or the subordinate pig being bullied in a large group housing system. The technology is promising but faces practical challenges including consistent lighting, camera placement, and animal cooperation that affect accuracy in farm conditions. As the technology matures, it has the potential to transform individual animal welfare monitoring at scale.
