Deer welfare in farming systems is complicated by the animals being relatively undomesticated and retaining strong prey-species fear responses to human handling. Even well-managed deer farms cause significant stress during mustering, veterinary treatment, and transport because deer cannot be habituated to handling as fully as cattle or sheep. Velvet harvesting under anaesthesia represents good welfare practice but is not universal, and unanaesthetised velvet removal causes severe pain. Farm design that minimises the frequency and stress of handling is the most important single welfare factor in deer farming systems.
