Microchipping is one of the simplest and most cost-effective welfare interventions available for companion cats. Lost cats without identification face prolonged shelter stays, stress of captivity, and in some cases euthanasia when shelters are at capacity. Reunification through microchipping prevents the suffering of extended separation for both cat and owner. Mandatory microchipping programmes in countries that have implemented them show consistent improvements in reunification rates and reductions in the number of unidentified cats entering the shelter system. The welfare case for microchipping is robust and the welfare costs of the procedure itself are minimal.
