Mineral imbalances — both deficiencies and toxicities — cause significant preventable welfare problems in livestock, manifesting as reproductive failure, skeletal disease, neurological disorders, and immune impairment across multiple species.
Mineral nutrition welfare problems are often invisible until they cause serious clinical disease, by which point significant animal suffering has already occurred. The welfare case for proactive mineral management — testing soils and forages, supplementing targeted minerals at appropriate levels, and monitoring animals for early signs of imbalance — is compelling because deficiencies are largely preventable at low cost. The challenge is that subclinical deficiency causes diffuse welfare harm through reduced immune function, growth impairment, and reproductive compromise that is difficult to attribute directly without testing. Mineral management programmes that prevent deficiency deliver welfare benefits that are significant but rarely quantified.
