Nose rings are used in cattle for handling and weaning management, but their welfare implications have led to growing scrutiny and the development of less invasive alternatives.
The nasal septum is a pain-sensitive structure, and nose ring insertion without anaesthesia causes acute pain. Permanent rings create ongoing welfare concerns including chronic pressure sensitivity, infection risk and restriction of normal grazing behaviour when rings catch on vegetation. For bulls, improved handling facilities using race systems and restraint equipment provide safer management without requiring painful restraint devices. Welfare-conscious producers are increasingly adopting facility-based bull management, eliminating nose rings through better infrastructure rather than painful tissue modification.
