Drones offer genuine welfare benefits for wildlife research by replacing more disturbing alternatives including boat approaches, light aircraft surveys and repeated human entry into sensitive areas. A whale body condition assessment from 30 metres altitude using a drone is less disturbing than close boat approaches used in previous research methods. However, drones are not impact-free — close approaches cause measurable physiological stress in sensitive species, particularly breeding birds and hauled-out marine mammals. Welfare-conscious drone use in wildlife research requires species-specific minimum distance protocols, avoidance of breeding seasons, selection of quieter drone models and pre-survey habituation where possible. The welfare calculus is generally positive when drones replace more disturbing methods but negative when they add new disturbance to previously undisturbed populations.
